The Gozo Civil Abattoir provides slaughtering services of bovines, swine and small ruminants according to EU and national regulations. It is the only provider of such services in Gozo. The Public Abattoir in Malta is the other red meat establishment on the Maltese islands that provides such slaughtering services. Together with the Veterinary Services’ Section we ensure proper traceability of the food chain. This includes the animal’s life on farm, transportation of animal to the slaughterhouse, slaughter process itself and the subsequent handling of the carcass.

Other Services:

  • Dispatch of carcasses and deboned meat to butcher shops or meat processors.
  • The Gozo Civil Abattoir also provides a service of cutting and deboning of carcasses being slaughtered at the premises.
  • Provision of an On Call 24-hour service on-farm emergency slaughtering service for livestock farmers in situations where an unforeseen, on farm malady to one or more farm animals results in a state that requires immediate action by the official Government Veterinarian and slaughter of that animals by the abattoir butchers.
  • Grant subsidy to livestock farmers on the transportation of fodder.
  • Another facility within the Abattoir is the Animal By Products (ABP) Storage Facility. In this facility, fallen animals which are corpses of animals originating from animal holdings and private households are received. ABP waste generated from butcher shops, commercial outlets, and the slaughterhouse itself are all disposed in this facility. All ABP in this facility is transported to WasteServ Malta for incineration.
