The Research Unit within the Rural Gozo Directorate develops and implements research initiatives which are of interest to Gozo, its environment, and community. It is mainly engaged in projects primarily concerning sustainability, natural science, ecology, water and resources, climate science, agricultural sustainability and innovation, craftsmanship and island studies. It aims at creating synergies and networks, source and execute research and development initiatives to improve the island’s sustainability and its resilience in the face of the climate challenges ahead.

- Providing scientific Information and recommendations as requested.
- Manage the Laboratories at the Government Experimental Farm in Xewkija.
- Maintaining an active communication with scientific communities in the Mediterranean and beyond.
- Participate in the workings of the MTA Tourism Observatory as an active stakeholder.
- Support National and foreign agencies, universities and research Organisations on their work in Gozo.
- Seek to introduce new Technologies to Gozo.
- Oversee the installation and maintenance of scientific equipment in Gozo.
