The Gozo Veterinary Services’ mission is a regulatory one where all necessary official controls are carried out on live farm animals and/or products of animal origin as requested by National and European legal framework. Veterinary officials ensure that both health and welfare of farm animals are properly maintained from the farm to the slaughter line. This means that they will ensure that all products of animal origin are safe for consumption in line with the public health standards.
Services
- Carrying out daily visits on farms with particular focus on Tuberculosis, Brucellosis and Enzootic Bovine Leucosis (EBL) eradication schemes.
- Carrying out herd &/flock census, tagging and re-tagging of bovines and ruminants.
- Carrying out biosecurity inspections and sampling on poultry farms focusing on Salmonella, Avian Influenza and anti-microbial resistance residue.
- Carrying out biosecurity inspections on swine (pig) farms, tattooing of piglets are applied for identification and sampling.
- Carrying out identification and inspection of animals that are brought at the Gozo Civil abattoir to be slaughtered (ante-mortem) are being done according to EU & National regulations.
- Carrying out the slaughtering process at the Civil Abattoir in accordance to EU & National regulations.
- Carrying out the identification and inspection of meat, meat offal and other internal organs of animals (post-mortem) according to EU & National regulations.
